September is Library Card Sign-up Month

Did you know that a library card is the most important school supply your child can own?

From free access to databases and homework help, to educational programs, story times, and other activities the library has something for every student at every age.

In fact in these chaotic financial times, a free public library card is one of the best bargains you can get without spending any money at all!  Your public library card could be the most valuable card in your wallet!  It provides the opportunity to get a free passport to a wide array of services and information made available through your local tax dollars.

Why is your local public library such a bargain?  With your library card you have the opportunity to try new subjects and genres you might otherwise miss if you had to plunk down $20 just to find out that you detest the latest craze in vampire romance novels.

And if your local library doesn’t own the title you want, they can get it for you through inter-library loan.

Libraries have free Wi Fi, no need to buy an expensive coffee, though many libraries now have cafes where you can buy a coffee or bring your own drink from home.

Not a reader?  If you haven’t checked out libraries recently many offer CDs, audio books, DVDs and downloadable media. With downloadable audio and electronic books, once you get your library card, you can do it all from the comfort of your own home!

Lots of information can be found on the Internet, but through your library’s website you can access costly databases for free.  How do you know what online information to trust? Trained librarians recommend websites and databases to help you research, evaluate and explore.

Libraries encourage life-long learning both as an independent learner and by providing classes or discussion on a variety of subjects.  You can expand your technology skills, obtain career advice, participate in a book discussion group or go to the movies all in a convenient one-stop location.

These are only some of the reasons to visit your library and register for a card if you don’t already have one.  After all, these days who doesn’t like to save money?
