By Jill Pannkuk, Library Director

The seven members of the board of the Liberal Memorial Library have completed training in all five trustee core skills and are now certified.  The trustees who have received their certification are:

Juneil McQueen
Randy Scantlin
Don Hill
Jane Balman
Jody Holt
Kenneth Thompson
Olga Cisneros

Director Jill Pannkuk commented, “I am really proud of our board and their willingness to put forth the extra time and effort needed to achieve certification.  They are a great group who work well together and bring an array of talents and skills to the board.”

The library has completed a number of capital improvement projects in the past two years including remodeling the staff area, installing new shelving and signage in the adult section and replacing three air conditioning/heating units. And at the end of the month new handicapped accessible doors will be installed.

Over the next few months members of the board will be continuing to learn more about libraries and their role as trustees by viewing and discussing Trustee Trouble:  The Misadventures of a New Library Board Member.  They are also working on a strategic plan and are reviewing the library’s policy manual.

Future plans include renovation of the lower level of the library and installing a new roof.

Shannon Roy, Trustee Certification Coordinator at the State Library, commented, “It is wonderful that this board was able to certify all its members in a timely fashion and it is wonderful that they will be studying more and doing strategic planning.  We will be hearing more about Liberal’s accomplishments.”

First Trustee Training Workshop of 2009 Was Very Enjoyable

Bonnie McKewon

The first Statewide Trustee Training Workshop of 2009 was held on Saturday, April 25. Bonnie McKewon, Administrator of the Northwest Iowa Library Services, came to Kansas to be the special guest of the State Library and the Kansas Library Trustee Association Board. Bonnie covered Core Skill Two: Developing an Effective Board, and Core Skill Five: Strategic Planning.

Bonnie is not only an experienced presenter, but she has a natural warmth and a wealth of ideas that engaged the audience and made the morning enjoyable. The workshop was somewhat lightly attended, April apparently being as frantic as May, but there was a very lively discussion on a number of issues. Among the comments noted were: “I never heard of such a thing!” “Where did you say we could find that?” “Is that whole program available online or do we need to buy it?” and “We have access to HOW MANY audiobooks in that program?” One of several messages that the Kansas library community wants to send with the Kansas Library Trustee Certification Program is: “It’s a whole new world out there!” Trustees enjoy their jobs more when they are fully involved with their library’s development and when they are learning more about the extraordinary world of modern librarianship.

Bonnie covered library planning as a successful partnership among the library, the community and the changing world where the community leaders, including the librarians, select their priorities after studying the needs and strengths of their community. When Bonnie spoke of the importance of a very good relationship between the library and the local government, one participant from a small community responded that she was the librarian and the City Clerk. She was teased about the excellent discussions she would be having with herself as the library and the community developed.

Bonnie McKewon will be repeating this workshop on Saturday, October 3, 2009. Trustees who would enjoy this lively program will have another opportunity to attend it. In October, she will also be participating in the second Administrative Training Package for Kansas Librarians, which will be on Library Policies.

The second Statewide Trustee Training workshop will be held on Saturday, June 6, from 9:00 to 1:00. It will cover Core Skill One: Working with the Library Administration, Core Skill Three: Developing Effective Support, and Core Skill Four: Assessing and Adopting Library Policy. It will be taught by Caroline McKight of the KLTA Board, Kerry Story of the KLTA Board and Jenifer Trimble, Director of the Coffey County Library.

Attendance at both workshops will meet all requirements for trustee certification. The registration flyer for these programs may be found at:

http://skyways.lib.ks.us/KSL/ce/trustees-spg09.html

The registration for the June workshop will be open until May 22. This workshop will be repeated on October 17, 2009. Questions or concerns may be directed to Shannon Roy at shanroy@kslib.info or 785-296-2148.

Most of the certified Kansas trustees have gained their core skill credits for certification by attending the Statewide Trustee Training available twice a year through the ELMeR video network or through board tutorials taught at their board meetings. However, there are other ways of gaining core skill credits.

Any working session attended at a system workshop or at a library conference will qualify for one or more trustee core skills, although they are sometimes core skills that the trustee already has. If there is any question about the core skills a conference or system session will gain, a query may be sent to Shannon Roy at shanroy@kslib.info.

Trustees or their director should record a completed WebJunction Kansas course and add it to the list of the completed core skill credits. When all five core skill credits have been gained, a request for certification should be sent to Shannon Roy at the State Library of Kansas. The State Library will record the certification date and send the certificate to the library director. Questions about the program may also be sent to Shannon Roy at 785/296-2148 or shanroy@kslib.info.

The State Library staff have been delighted with the progress of this program. It clearly reflects the commitment of both trustees and their librarians.

Trustees are Invited to Spring Statewide Training

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

The State Library of Kansas staff is pleased to continue the Statewide Training Program for Trustee Certification. As it was in 2008, the trustee certification training will be offered  in two workshops in the spring and repeated at  two workshops in the fall.

reaching_for_excellence_-__copy_007

The spring workshops will be offered on Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 to 1:00 and on Saturday, June 6, from 9:00 to 1:00. The merrie month of May has been avoided at the request of the Kansas trustees. May is a lovely month, but not the time for Saturday workshops.

The April 25 program will cover Core Skill Two: Developing an Effective Board and Core Skill Five: Strategic Planning. It will be taught by Bonnie McKewon, the director of the Northwest Iowa Library Services. Bonnie has given many presentations to both librarians and trustees in her native Iowa and she is very interested in trustee development. Bonnie will be reprising her workshop on Saturday, October 3.

The April 25 workshop will be available at four video training sites in the Kansas ELMeR (Enhanced Library Meeting Rooms) Network. It will be available at Coffey County Library, Dodge City Public Library, Hays Public Library and Manhattan Public Library.

The June 6 program will cover Core Skill One: Working with the Library Administration, Core Skill Three: Developing Effective Support, and Core Skill Four: Assessing and Adopting Policy. Core Skill One will be presented by Kerry Storey of the Kansas Library Trustee Association Board and Core Skill Four will be presented by Caroline McKnight, the Chair of the Kansas Library Trustee Association Board. The members of the KLTA Board have been the State Library’s most active partners in designing and implementing the Trustee Certification Program and their help has been critical to the success of the project.

Core Skill Three will be presented by Jenifer Trimble, the Director of the Coffey County Library. Jenifer has a banking background, as well as her administrative experience at the Coffey County Library. She will bring a valuable perspective to the discussion on Core Skill Three: Developing Effective Support.

The June  workshop will be available at four video training sites in the Kansas ELMeR (Enhanced Library Meeting Rooms) Network. It will be available at Coffey County Library, Dodge City Public Library, Manhattan Public Library and Newton Public Library.

The registration flyer may be found at:
